I launched a special blog series to honor and champion other women in business. This is a companion service to a new podcast that launched on October 1, 2020.
My intention is to share insights of lessons learned by businesswomen and also elevate their services to the greater community. The goal is to inform and inspire other women with ideas in order to empower them to grow their own business ventures.
I met Ella through a fantastic virtual marketing tool: Twisted Networking. I will be sharing an interview on BroadBand the Podcast in a future episode of the founder of that service. Stay tuned!
Ella is a Renaissance woman. She is a creative and an entrepreneur. She has been entertaining since she was a small child and anyone influenced by Tina Turner, Chaka Kahn, and Ella Fitzgerald is someone I want to get to know! This ‘dream ignitor’ is a creative entrepreneur coach who has the brilliance and energy to motivate anyone to get in touch with their creative side. And, she also creates fantastic virtual events, by the way.
1. What is your business?
BECOMING Entertainment/Beyond Virtual Events virtual event production and creative business coaching
2. How many years have you been in business?
I am an entertainer by trade. I’ve been singing professionally for almost 30 years.
3. Why did you pick this trade in particular?
Yep, I started the day after I was born. LOL! Kidding aside, I’ve been an entertainer for a very long time. It had always been my desire to help other creatives understand the business side of creative business so they could move beyond starving artists to thriving artists. Along with that, I LOVE a good production and helping people create incredible experiences both in person and online.
4. If you could go back to your younger self, what kind of advice would you give yourself about your pursuit to create your own business?
Stay brave and push through.
5. Who influenced you – professionally?
I’ve had a LOT of professional influences…and the list is still growing. At the top of it right now is my coach Molly Mahoney. Watching her build her dream and learning from her growing has been invaluable to me.
6. When was your moment of realizing, “you know what, I got this!”?
In all honesty, it’s something I remind myself of everyday. I’m continually working through my own BS and looking for ways to be the better me I know exists. At this point, I live in her on more hours than not.
7. What advice would you share with someone who is thinking about, or just beginning, managing their own business?
How much time do I have? I could seriously speak on this all day. But I’ll do my best to keep it brief. Get crystal clear on your WHAT. It’s hard to get anywhere if you don’t know where in the world you’re going. There is where so many get it wrong. Someone asks them what they want to do and they kind of waffle around it. If YOU’RE not clear on what you want to do, it will be hard for others to ride that train with you or bring you resources to help you. Also, dream big…and then dream bigger. I know, I know. Dreams are for kids. But I encourage you to consider all the amazing things you take part in everyday. One of my favorite dreamers is George Lucas. Think about it. His crazy dream was Star Wars. He wanted to make a movie for which NONE of the equipment to make it existed! And yet, here we all are years later LOVING his impossible dream. That got rejected MULTIPLE times, as well. If dreaming is good enough for the multi millionaires you admire, I believe it’s good enough for you. Next, people usually miss the most important part. You MUST reverse engineer the dream. This is where your plan comes from. This is how that dream goes from dream to reality. Lastly, take small steps toward that dream everyday. Do not wait until you have everything in place to begin.
8. Are you more of a every little bit counts kind of person or an all-or-nothing kind of person?
I’m definitely and every little bit counts person. If you wait for things to be perfect, you will never get anything done. Start with what you have. And that may be nothing. Do what you can with the nothing until you have something. And keep this in mind as you go: you can always tweak things along the way, but you can’t tweak what you’ve never started.
9. How much time do you devote to professional development/learning each week or month?
I don’t know that I’ve ever calculated the amount of time. I’ve got some kind of personal development or learning going on every day of my week.
10. Any suggestions on resources: books, podcasts, online learning, blogs + tools?
Oooo!! There are too many to choose from, but here are a few:
- Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller it’s a great book that will help you SIMPLIFY your message. I LOVE simple.
- You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero (basically any of the Bad Ass books by Jen Sincero). You really should get the audio version of this book because her voice is awesome and hearing her inflections will crack you up.
- The Fearless Money Mindset: Broke Doesn’t Scare Me by Arian Simone. I’ve only just picked this one up after hearing her interview with Marie Foreo a couple weeks ago. She’s incredible. I can’t wait to dig into her book!
- BONUS: Musings of a Creative: Kickass Thoughts On Music, Business and Life by Ella Glasgow. Of course I had to throw my own book into the mix
It’s short, sweet and to the point and just enough ass kicking to get you in gear
11. Five things to know about you:
What is your favorite flower? Lillies
Coffee or tea? sweet tea (I am a southerner afterall)
Tahiti or Paris? Neither. I’d rather go back to New Zealand
Are you an intention setter or goal setter? Both
Favorite quote? “You’ve got to work through the ugly to get to the pretty.” -Ella Glasgow
